The College of Law at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) held the inaugural ‘Clinton W. Francis Lecture in Legal Professionalism’ in the presence of invited guests, students, faculty, and staff, in keeping with its goal of leading and shaping the conversation about critical legal issues in Qatar recently.
The lecture series was established in memory of the college’s founding dean, Dr. Clinton W. Francis, who is now a Professor at Northwestern University’s Pritzker School of Law.
The lecture, which will be held annually, is intended to draw attention to the rules that govern the practice of law, both in terms of their substance and application. The lecture will also recognise Dr. Francis and his contributions to the College of Law, which is in its sixth year.
Mohammed Essa Al-Mannai, General Counsel and Board Secretary at QatarEnergy, delivered the inaugural lecture, emphasizing the responsibility of lawyers to exercise judgment in a reasoned, objective, and ethical manner in a variety of circumstances, including many that raise conflicting norms.
Al-Mannai is one of Qatar’s most powerful lawyers, with experience in corporate governance, dispute resolution, and joint venture transactions. He shared his thoughts on professional behavior and the nature of legal practice in the corporate setting.
Dr. Francis responded to Al-Mannai’s address and built on the latter’s emphasis on the unique role of the lawyer as a fiduciary for clients. The College of Law’s Dean Susan L. Karamanian moderated an interactive session with the audience in which members posed challenging questions about how to best incentivize ethical conduct in the workplace.
“We are delighted to launch the Clinton W. Francis Lecture in Legal Professionalism. We were honored to have had our founding dean, Dr. Francis, with us and to have had one of Qatar’s most experienced lawyers, Mohammed Al-Mannai, share his insights into an issue that is of importance to lawyers and law students, alike. The College of Law seeks to strengthen the focus on legal professionalism in practice as ultimately society benefits when lawyers adhere to the highest ethical standards,” said Dean Karamanian.
The College of Law hosts events on a regular basis that examine cutting-edge legal issues relevant to Qatar. Please visit cl.hbku.edu.qa for more information.
