European negotiators have warned that the international nuclear deal with Iran may collapse after progress in the talks was interrupted following new demands from Russia.
Moscow is demanding guarantees that Western sanctions related to the war in Ukraine will not hinder economic and military relations between Iran and Russia.
The nuclear agreement, officially called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPoA), should not be exploited “to obtain assurances that are separate to the JCPoA,” negotiators from Germany, France and Britain said on Saturday.
The negotiators, along with diplomats from Russia and China, have been mediating between Iran and the United States for 11 months.
“This risks the collapse of the deal, depriving the Iranian people of sanctions lifting and the international community of the assurance needed on Iran’s nuclear programme,” they said.
The countries called for the agreement to be concluded “with the utmost urgency.” The US had left the Iran nuclear deal, which had been signed to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, in 2018 under then president Donald Trump.
Trump had also renewed the sanctions on Iran that had been lifted with the deal, causing a severe economic crisis in Iran.
Tehran reacted by breaking the restrictions set by the deal one by one, including the production of nearly weapons-grade uranium.
The agreement that has been worked out provides for the US to lift its sanctions against Iran.
