Tel Aviv: A Palestinian man attacked a police officer with a knife during a security check in Ashkelon, according to Israeli sources on Tuesday, in a further incident of violence in recent days. The officer shot the man, the police said on Tuesday. The attacker was from the Palestinian city of Hebron in the south of the West Bank. The officer suffered slight injuries.
The situation in the region has been extremely tense after four attacks by Palestinians left more than a dozen Israelis dead within two weeks. The Israeli army has stepped up its counterterrorism efforts in the occupied West Bank. (dpa)
