COVID infections continue to rise in Shanghai despite large-scale lockdowns, officials said Wednesday.
A high of 26,330 new infections were reported Tuesday, authorities said on Wednesday. But most of the cases are asymptomatic.
Shanghai is at the centre of the largest Covid wave in China since the pandemic began more than two years ago and has recorded most of the nearly 28,000 cases
nationwide.
Despite the announcement Monday of an expected gradual easing of the lockdown, the vast majority of the Shanghai area population of 26 million continues to be affected by curfews.
The city government has also banned private traffic on the streets.
But residents were allowed to leave their homes on Wednesday.
However, most shops remain closed. At Volkswagen, plants in Shanghai and in Changchun in north-east China continued to
stand still.
Although curfews are to be lifted in residential areas in Shanghai that have seen no new infections in the past two weeks, neighborhood committees and property management companies are asking residents not to leave their apartments or housing complexes as a precaution.
There is growing resentment in Shanghai - China’s economic and financial centre - over insufficient food supplies, problems with medical care or infected children being kept apart from their parents due to quarantine rules.
